Testing is emotional. It is a learned response from
early school days. It causes test anxiety. (Hofstrand
1995) Testing is the method educators use to evaluate
learners, colleges use to evaluate potential students,
and business and industry use to evaluate workers. (Sullivan
1991) Testing Strategies is a research-based course
coupled with pragmatic, learner-centered field studies
that assess the following test methods: 1) objective
(matching, multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank,
20 subjective (essay, short answer), 3) oral (expert
panels, walk-throughs, talk-throughs) and, 4) psychomotor
(performance) tests. Other course elements include formative
and summative tests, test validity and reliability,
evaluating test results, and suggestions for test-wiseness.
Each session is followed by field testing of the methods
and elements in a classroom or other school setting.
These giving and taking test strategies may be used
in any class and with any subject.

“Our nation is in a college-readiness crisis. Too few
of our students are prepared to enter the workforce
or postsecondary education without additional training
or remediation when they graduate from high school.
And far too many have to take remedial courses as part
of their postsecondary educations.” (American College
Testing 2004) High school graduates with some vocational/applied
learning experiences in school, ranging from community
service work to internships, attained higher grade-point
averages in their freshman year in college than students
with no career experience in school. (Lewis, 2004) How
can educators create a “career experience” for all students,
regardless of the course content? In this course educators
review and apply the research about college readiness
and how integrating academics and career concepts can
create a “rich learning approach [that] allows students
to perceive themselves as potentially smart in a number
of ways.” (Sherer 2006). Each session is followed by
field tests of the course content in which students
and teachers engage in academic tasks set in a real
world context–a hands-on, minds-on approach–conducted
in classrooms or other school settings.
